Security

I've been reading and thinking a lot lately about security.  Not like security systems, but a special blankie or pacifier or stuffed animal.  I've never liked pacifiers, and I intend to try to do without when we get our baby.  I know, all of you mothers out there are probably laughing at me and think I'll change my mind pretty quickly.  And maybe I will, who knows.  But I'll try to forego pacifiers, which leaves blankets or stuffed animals.

My security was a yellow blanket.  I LOVED that blanket, and carried it around with me for a lot longer than I probably should have.  When I was at home last weekend, my mom got it out of her cedar chest and showed it to me.  It was so thin and had so many holes that you could see straight through it.  It had been cut and sewn so many times and was kind of an odd shape, but it was exactly how I remembered it.

As I got older, I moved on from my blankie to a stuffed bear that I won from Chuck E Cheese, aptly named Pinky.  I still have Pinky, and she's in much better shape than my blanket.  In fact, she's in the basinet upstairs.  There were other stuffed animals after Pinky, but Pinky was always the one I'd come back to when I had a bad day or was scared or upset.

Even now, as I'm approaching 30 years old (yikes!), I have a pillow case that I've used since I was a child.  It's a Strawberry Shortcake one that I don't seem to be able to trade in for one that matches the rest of our bedding.  Can I sleep without it?  Of course!  But there's still something comforting about it...
