Newest addition

So excited to welcome Keragan Mackenzie to our family!!!  We've been getting a lot of information from a lot of different people about her over the past few days, so we're still trying to sort through it and keep it all straight.  To give a quick overview, we got the call on Tuesday evening that there was a baby, however she was premature.  She was born on March 2, around 31 weeks, but different doctors have guessed anywhere from 31 to 34 weeks.  The poor little girl has been in NICU since March 2 with no family to hold her and love on her.  We didn't even hesitate to say yes, we'd love to take her!  We had to wait until today for the birth mother to sign the paperwork, and then we headed to the hospital.

She is perfect!  So incredibly tiny, but perfect.  We had been told she was 4 lbs 3 oz, however when we got here she was listed as 3 lbs 15 oz.  I asked if she lost weight, but they said that she had never been up to 4 lbs. Not sure what happened there.  Anyway, she's in an isolette because of her weight, but they think she might be able to be moved to a crib either tomorrow or Sunday.  This will allow us to hold her more, which will be great.

All of her vitals are strong, except for respiration.  She's still getting oxygen, and has apnea attacks.  She's been averaging 4 attacks a day, where her body just forgets to breathe, and the nurses have to wake her up and then she starts breathing again.  We talked to her doctor, and apparently she has to go 7-10 days without any attacks before they'll release her from the hospital.  It seems that we may have a long way to go, however today she didn't have any attacks.  So, hopefully she's getting stronger!

They had told us that she was having trouble eating, and so they were feeding her through a tube.  However, they were able to get her to take a bottle right before we came, and she drank the entire amount!  Then I was able to give her two bottle feedings, and both of them she ate enough without her heart rate and breathing dropping that she didn't have to be fed at all through her tube!  Another day of that, and they'll be able to get rid of the feeding tube.

Troy is definitely a proud dad.  He has been sooo excited, which in turn makes me even more excited.  He was scared to hold her because she was so small, but he finally did hold her, and then it was almost impossible to get her back!  She already has him wrapped around her little finger.  Pics coming up next!
